On 1 April 2026, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched a call for comments and evidence to support the scientific evaluation of occupational exposure limits (OELs) for copper and its inorganic compounds. The substance is identified by EC Number 231-159-6 and CAS Number 7440-50-8. This initiative, open until 1 July 2026, aims to collect comprehensive scientific data on workplace exposure. Stakeholders are invited to submit information on uses, exposure levels, toxicological and epidemiological data, health effects, and modes of action. The collected evidence will contribute to the preparation of ECHA's scientific report assessing occupational risks associated with copper compounds. ECHA has been mandated by the European Commission to evaluate whether regulatory measures such as airborne OELs, short-term exposure limits (STELs), biological limit values (BLVs), or biological guidance values (BGVs) are necessary. These evaluations play a key role in supporting EU regulatory action to protect workers from chemical hazards.
