On 1 April 2026, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched a call for comments and evidence to support the development of occupational exposure limits (OELs) for selected bisphenols. The substances covered include 4,4'-sulphonyldiphenol (BPS) (EC 201-250-5; CAS 80-09-1), 4,4'-methylenediphenol (BPF) (EC 210-65-2; CAS 620-92-8), and 4,4'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl) ethylidene]diphenol (BPAF) (EC 216-036-7; CAS 1478-61-1). The call, open until 1 July 2026, aims to gather scientific data relevant to occupational exposure, including information on uses, exposure levels, toxicology, epidemiology, health effects, and modes of action. This initiative supports ECHA's mandate from the European Commission to evaluate potential exposure risks and assess the need for regulatory limits such as airborne OELs, short-term exposure limits (STELs), biological limit values (BLVs), or biological guidance values (BGVs). These bisphenols are of concern due to their potential reproductive toxicity, with BPS and BPAF already classified as Reproductive Toxicity Category 1B. The collected evidence will contribute to ECHA's scientific evaluation, which underpins future EU-level regulatory measures to protect workers, in line with Directive 2004/37/EC on carcinogens, mutagens, and reprotoxic substances.
