On 1 June 2026 Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) published Draft Amendment No. 2 to IS 4955:2020, Household Laundry Detergent Powders - Specification (Fifth Revision) for public consultation. The draft was issued by the Soaps and Other Surface Active Agents Sectional Committee (CHD 25) and proposes significant revisions aimed at strengthening environmental and product composition requirements for household laundry detergent powders. Under the proposed amendment, a new clause 5.7 would be inserted requiring that household laundry detergent powders shall not contain any phosphate when tested in accordance with the method prescribed in Annex D. This change reflects growing regulatory attention to the environmental impacts of phosphate-containing detergents, particularly their contribution to water pollution and eutrophication. In addition, the amendment proposes deletion of the entire row corresponding to Serial No. (ii) in Table 1, thereby removing an existing specification requirement from the standard. The draft amendment is currently open for stakeholder review and comments. Manufacturers, industry associations, testing laboratories, consumer groups, and other interested parties are invited to provide feedback on the proposed changes. The last date for submission of comments is 9 August 2026
