Malaysia has proposed amendments to the Food Regulations 1985 [P.U.(A) 437/1985] to expand the use of novel ingredients and functional claims in specialized nutrition products. The proposal would add Lactobacillus casei Shirota (L. casei Shirota) to the list of components eligible for other function claims, together with specified function claims, minimum required amounts, and conditions of use under the Fifth A Schedule.
The amendments would also authorize 2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL), a human milk oligosaccharide (HMO), as an optional ingredient in several categories of infant and young child nutrition products. Specifically, 2'-FL would be permitted in formulated milk powder for children, infant formula, and follow-up formula, with specified maximum nutrient levels established for each category. The WTO notification states that Malaysia proposes to allow 2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL) as a permitted optional ingredient with a maximum level of 120 mg/100 mL in these three product categories.
