The Swedish Food Agency has highlighted new EU import requirements for products of animal origin that will apply from 3 September 2026. Under the new rules, only third countries included on the EU's approved list will be allowed to export affected animal products to the EU. Exporting countries must demonstrate compliance with EU requirements on the prudent use of antimicrobial medicinal products in food-producing animals. The measure aims to combat antimicrobial resistance and ensure imported products meet standards equivalent to those applied within the EU. In July 2026, the Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) published guidance on new EU import requirements for products of animal origin that will take effect on 3 September 2026. Under the new framework, only third countries included on the EU's approved list will be permitted to export the relevant animal-origin products to the EU. To remain eligible, competent authorities in exporting countries must provide official assurances demonstrating compliance with EU rules restricting the use of antimicrobial medicinal products in food-producing animals. The Swedish Food Agency noted that Brazil is currently not included on the approved list. Consequently, exports of the affected products from Brazil to the EU will not be permitted from 3 September 2026 unless the country subsequently demonstrates compliance and is added to the approved list. The measure is intended to ensure imported animal products meet the same antimicrobial-use standards as products produced within the EU, supporting efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance and maintain a high level of food safety protection.
