The UK government launched a detailed strategy to rapidly phase out animal testing by supporting the development and adoption of alternative methods. Backed by £75 million in new funding, the plan promotes technologies such as organ-on-a-chip systems, AI-driven safety predictions, and 3D-bioprinted tissues. Key milestones include ending regulatory skin and eye irritation tests on animals by 2026, stopping mouse botox potency tests and adopting DNA-based contaminant testing by 2027, and reducing pharmacokinetic studies on dogs and primates by 2030. The strategy, developed with scientists, industry, and animal welfare groups, also establishes a new translational models hub and the UK Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods. Widely welcomed across the scientific and animal welfare community, the roadmap aims to strengthen ethical research while maintaining safety standards and reinforcing the UK’s leadership in innovative non-animal testing technologies.
