Australia & New Zealand has approved Application A1357, amending the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to permit Rebaudioside M (Reb M) and Rebaudioside D (Reb D) steviol glycosides produced through enzymatic conversion using enzymes derived from genetically modified Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). The approval does change permitted use levels. Reb M and Reb D produced by this method may be used only under the same conditions and maximum permitted levels already established for steviol glycosides in Schedule 15 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, with limits expressed as steviol equivalents.
