On 20 May 2026, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced the establishment and revision of several Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure that national standards remain aligned with technological advancements and evolving societal needs. The update includes the establishment of two new JIS standards and the revision of twenty existing standards, reflecting continued modernization across industrial sectors. JIS serves as Japan’s national standardization system under the Industrial Standardization Act, defining requirements for the quality, performance, testing methods, and evaluation criteria of products, services, and data. These standards support manufacturers and service providers in delivering reliable and high-quality offerings while helping consumers access products and services that meet recognized performance benchmarks. According to METI, the newly established and revised standards were developed through collaboration with certified industrial standards creation bodies. The Japan Iron and Steel Federation prepared two new standards and contributed to ten revisions, while the Japan Standards Association developed nine revised standards. The updates were implemented through the national standardization process overseen by the competent ministries and the Japan Industrial Standards Committee (JISC).
