On 12 June 2026, Government of Japan published the final results of the public consultation on amendments to the labelling requirements for products containing perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) or its salts, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its isomers or salts, PFOA-related substances, and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and its isomers or salts under the Act on the Examination and Regulation of Manufacture, etc. of Chemical Substances (CSCL). The amendments revise the information that must be displayed on containers, packaging, or invoices to support measures preventing environmental pollution from Type I Specified Chemical Substances. The draft proposal was released for public consultation on 31 March 2026, with comments accepted until 30 April 2026. During the consultation period, two public comments were submitted. After reviewing the feedback, the authorities concluded that no changes to the draft amendments were necessary, and the revised requirements were promulgated on 12 June 2026. The updated provisions strengthen communication of environmental risk information by ensuring that regulated PFAS-containing products carry appropriate labelling and documentation. These amendments support Japan's implementation of stricter controls on persistent organic pollutants (POPs), improve supply chain transparency, and reinforce compliance with national chemical management and environmental protection requirements.
