"The Kingdom of Bahrain, in coordination with the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, has notified the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) at the WTO of proposed regulations for Mango Agar (Chutney), a product offered for direct consumption. The draft regulations, issued by Bahrain’s Ministry of Industry & Commerce, aim to ensure food safety and consumer protection across all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) markets.
The proposed regulations cover Mango Agar (Chutney) intended for direct consumption, including use in restaurants or repacking, but do not apply if the product is marked for further processing. The regulation references the Codex Standard for Mango Chutney (CXS 160-1987, amended 2023) to establish safety and quality benchmarks.
The documents are available in English (7 pages) and Arabic (8 pages), accessible through the WTO ePing portal:
The proposed date of adoption is yet to be determined, with the entry into force expected six months after official publication in the country’s Official Gazette. Stakeholders and interested parties can submit comments on the proposal until 19 December 2025.
This initiative reflects the Gulf states’ continued commitment to harmonizing food safety standards with international benchmarks and enhancing the safety of ready-to-eat traditional food products for consumers in the region."
