Health Canada announced that sports electrolyte products currently regulated under the Natural Health Products (NHP) framework will be reclassified and regulated as supplemented foods in Canada.
Product Categories Affected: The reclassification applies to a broad range of sports electrolyte products, including:
1.Ready-to-drink electrolyte waters
2.Sports drinks
3.Electrolyte powders for reconstitution
4.Effervescent electrolyte tablets intended for dissolution
5.Concentrated electrolyte liquid formulations

Under the updated approach, products marketed and presented similarly to conventional foods will no longer be regulated as Natural Health Products. Instead, they will fall under Canada’s supplemented food regulatory framework.
Health Canada stated that the change is intended to:
-Improve regulatory consistency across food-like products
-Increase transparency for consumers
-Align oversight with product presentation and intended use
-Ensure products resembling conventional beverages are regulated under food standards rather than therapeutic product frameworks

Industry Impact
Manufacturers and marketers of sports hydration and electrolyte products will need to transition product compliance, labelling, formulation, and regulatory submissions to align with supplemented food requirements before the December 2027 deadline.
The reclassification represents a significant shift in Canada’s approach to functional hydration products and reflects broader regulatory efforts to distinguish food-like products from therapeutic health products within the Canadian marketplace.
