Malaysia has proposed amendments to the Food Regulations 1985 to introduce mandatory sugar content grading labelling for packaged beverages, aimed at providing consumers with clearer information on beverage sugar levels.

The proposed amendments introduce a new Regulation 18BA to establish requirements and conditions for sugar content grading labels on packaged beverages. A new table will be incorporated into the Fifth A Schedule to set out the criteria and conditions for assigning sugar content grades, while an additional table will specify the design and technical specifications of the sugar grading mark. The grading system is intended to provide a standardized framework for classifying the sugar content of beverages, thereby enhancing consumer awareness and facilitating informed purchasing decisions. As a result, manufacturers of packaged beverages will be required to review and update their product labels to ensure compliance with the new sugar grading and marking requirements.
