The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has issued Notice No. 2026-296 proposing amendments to the food labelling standards to enhance consumer protection and transparency. The draft introduces a mandatory disclaimer for general foods manufactured in capsule, tablet, or similar dosage forms, requiring the statement “This product is not a medicine or health functional food” to prevent consumers from confusing such products with pharmaceuticals or health supplements. In addition, the proposal revises free-range egg labelling requirements by allowing producers to continue using the free-range rearing environment label during government-imposed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) quarantine periods, provided that egg packaging also includes a statement informing consumers that the eggs were laid by non-free-range chickens during the quarantine period. These amendments aim to improve consumer awareness, maintain transparency during disease-control measures, and may require affected food companies to update their product labels and packaging if the changes are finalized.
