On 6 May 2026, World Trade Organization (WTO) circulated a notification submitted by Turkey concerning the draft “Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Restricting the Use of Bisphenol A, Other Hazardous Bisphenols, and Bisphenol Derivatives in Certain Materials and Articles in Contact with Food.” The notification identified the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Food and Control, as the responsible authority. Stakeholders were invited to submit comments on the proposed measure by 5 July 2026 under WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) procedures. The proposed Communiqué applies to food contact materials and articles and establishes specific regulatory requirements for Bisphenol A (BPA), its salts, other hazardous bisphenols and bisphenol derivatives used in the manufacture of materials intended to come into contact with food. According to the notification, the draft measure aims to introduce restrictions and conditions governing the use of these substances in food contact applications to strengthen food safety oversight and reduce potential health risks associated with chemical migration into food products. The notification stated that the objective of the proposed regulation is the protection of human health and safety. Türkiye proposed adoption of the Communiqué on 10 June 2026, with entry into force planned for 10 July 2026.
